About the Buick Skylark
The seventh-generation Buick Skylark debuted for 1992 with a radical 'new age' design, most notably its sharp, pointed front grille and swept-back styling. Built on the GM N-body platform shared with the Oldsmobile Achieva and Pontiac Grand Am, it was intended to attract younger buyers to the Buick brand. The base 2.3-litre engine was a single-overhead-cam variant of the famous Quad 4, marketed as the 'Quad OHC' to emphasize its efficiency over the high-revving DOHC versions. While the styling was controversial and later toned down in 1996, the 1992 model remains the purest expression of this era's bold aesthetic.

Buick Skylark fun facts
- The 1992 Skylark's 'beak' grille was so controversial that Buick performed a major emergency facelift for the 1996 model year to make it look more conventional.
- Despite its futuristic look, the 1992 model launched with a 3-speed automatic transmission at a time when most competitors had moved to 4-speed units.
- The car featured door-mounted front seatbelts that stayed buckled when the door opened, a common GM solution to meet passive restraint requirements before airbags were standard.
