About the Buick Skylark
The fifth-generation Skylark marked a radical departure for Buick, transitioning the nameplate to the front-wheel-drive X-body platform shared with the Chevrolet Citation. Marketed as a premium compact, it was significantly downsized to address the fuel crises of the 1970s while retaining traditional Buick luxury cues like plush velour and woodgrain trim. The standard 2.5-litre 'Iron Duke' engine prioritised durability and economy over performance, reflecting the era's shift toward efficiency. Despite early sales success, the generation was plagued by numerous recalls, though well-preserved survivors are now appreciated as symbols of GM's 1980s downsizing era.
