About the Buick Skylark
The 1962 Buick Skylark marked a significant transition, evolving from a trim level of the Special into a standalone model. While the Skylark was famed for its innovative aluminum V8, the 1962 model year introduced the 'Fireball' V6, the first mass-produced V6 engine in American automotive history. This cast-iron unit was essentially a 215-cubic-inch V8 with two cylinders removed, retaining the 90-degree bank angle which resulted in a distinctive, uneven firing order. Though marketed as an economy-focused alternative, the Skylark trim maintained its upscale positioning with plush vinyl interiors and signature 'VentiPorts' on the fenders. It remains a landmark for GM engineering, proving that a compact engine could deliver sufficient torque for a premium American car.

Buick Skylark fun facts
- The Fireball V6 engine was so successful that GM eventually sold the tooling to Kaiser-Jeep, only to buy it back years later to create the legendary 3800 V6 series.
- The 1962 Buick Special and Skylark range won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award, largely due to the introduction of the innovative V6 engine.
- Because of its 90-degree layout and three-throw crankshaft, the engine had a unique 'odd-fire' rhythm that gave it a characterful, if slightly rough, idle.
