About the Porsche 911 Turbo 996
The 996-generation Turbo marked a radical departure for Porsche, introducing water-cooling and a new chassis shared with the Boxster. At its heart is the 'Mezger' engine, a twin-turbocharged unit derived from the Le Mans-winning GT1 racer, which avoided the reliability issues of the standard 996 Carrera. It features a wider body, distinctive 'fried egg' bi-xenon headlights, and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system that provides immense traction. Once the 'unloved' 911 Turbo due to its styling, it is now highly prized by collectors for its bulletproof engineering and visceral, analogue driving experience.

Porsche 911 Turbo 996 fun facts
- The 996 Turbo's engine is fundamentally different from the standard Carrera's; it uses the GT1-derived Mezger block which does not suffer from IMS bearing failure.
- It was the first Porsche production car to be offered with Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as an option, though they became standard on the later Turbo S.
- The distinctive air intakes on the rear wings were necessary to feed the twin intercoolers, a design cue that became a signature for all subsequent water-cooled Turbos.
