About the Ford Taurus

The third-generation Ford Taurus debuted for the 1996 model year with a radical 'bio-kinetic' design language dominated by oval shapes. While intended to maintain its position as America's best-selling car, the polarizing styling proved controversial compared to its more conservative predecessor. The base 3.0-litre Vulcan V6 provided reliable but modest performance, prioritising comfort and cabin ergonomics. Despite the initial sales success, the design was softened for the subsequent generation to regain broader market appeal.

Ford Taurus fun facts

  • The 1996 Taurus design was so committed to the oval theme that even the rear window and the dashboard control pod were shaped like ovals.
