About the Dodge Coronet
By 1972, the Dodge Coronet had transitioned from a high-performance muscle car into a dedicated four-door family sedan and station wagon, with two-door duties handed over to the Charger. Built on the Chrysler B-body platform, it featured the 'Fuselage' styling language characterized by rounded, slab-sided bodywork and integrated bumpers. The 318 cubic-inch V8 was the mainstay engine, providing reliable if modest performance as the industry shifted toward SAE net power ratings and lower compression for emissions compliance. While less collectable than its R/T predecessors, it remains a robust example of early 1970s American automotive design.

Dodge Coronet fun facts
- In 1971, Dodge restricted the Coronet nameplate to four-door models only, effectively making the Charger the two-door version of the same car.
- The 1972 model year was the first to use SAE net horsepower ratings, causing the 318 V8's quoted output to 'drop' from 230 hp to 150 hp despite few physical changes.
- The 1972 Coronet featured a unique 'split' grille design that distinguished it from the 1971 model and the later 1973 facelift.
