About the Pontiac Grand Am
Introduced in 1973, the first-generation Pontiac Grand Am was a unique attempt to blend the luxury of the Grand Prix with the performance of the Trans Am. Built on the GM A-body 'Colonnade' platform, it was marketed as America's answer to European sport sedans, featuring a distinctive flexible 'Endura' nose and a Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) as standard. While it shared underpinnings with the LeMans, the Grand Am offered a more driver-focused interior with genuine African mahogany trim and bucket seats. The 1973 oil crisis and tightening emissions regulations quickly hampered sales of its large-displacement V8s, making this short-lived generation a rare sight today.

Pontiac Grand Am fun facts
- The Grand Am's name is a literal portmanteau of two other Pontiac models: the 'Grand' from the Grand Prix and the 'Am' from the Trans Am.
- It was one of the first American cars to feature radial-ply tires as standard equipment, part of Pontiac's 'Radial Tuned Suspension' package.
- The 1973 model featured a real African crossfire mahogany wood dash, which was replaced by simulated wood in 1974 due to delamination issues.
