About the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Introduced mid-year in 1969, the Trans Am was a $725 performance package that transformed the Firebird into a serious road-course contender. Named after the SCCA racing series, it featured a functional Ram Air hood, a distinctive rear spoiler, and heavy-duty suspension tuned for handling rather than just straight-line speed. Every 1969 example was finished in Cameo White with Tyrol Blue stripes, a nod to American racing colours. While it was a sales disappointment at launch with only 697 units built, its rarity and status as the first of the Trans Am lineage make it one of the most coveted muscle cars today.

Pontiac Firebird Trans Am fun facts
- Pontiac had to pay the SCCA a $5 royalty for every car sold to use the 'Trans Am' name, an agreement that lasted until the model was discontinued in 2002.
- Despite the name, the 400 cubic-inch V8 was actually too large for the SCCA Trans-Am series' 5.0-litre engine limit at the time.
- Only eight convertibles were ever produced for the 1969 model year, making them some of the rarest and most valuable Pontiacs in existence.
