About the Pontiac Grand Am
The 1985 Grand Am marked a radical departure for the nameplate, transitioning from a rear-wheel-drive mid-size car to a front-wheel-drive compact on the GM N-body platform. Designed to compete with European sports sedans, it featured a distinctive 'sledgehammer' front-end styling and a driver-centric interior. The 2.5-litre 'Tech IV' Iron Duke engine provided reliable, if modest, performance, paired with a standard five-speed manual gearbox. It was a massive commercial success, helping Pontiac regain its position as a top-selling division within General Motors during the late 1980s.
