About the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I
The Lancer Evolution I was born from Mitsubishi's need to homologate a more agile contender for the World Rally Championship, replacing the larger Galant VR-4. It utilised the proven 4G63T engine and a full-time all-wheel-drive system with a viscous coupling centre differential, packaged in the lightweight Lancer chassis. Originally intended as a Japan-only limited run of 2,500 units, overwhelming demand forced Mitsubishi to double production. It established the iconic Evo formula: a vented bonnet, large rear wing, and giant-killing performance that could embarrass contemporary supercars on a B-road.
