About the Honda Civic EG
The EG-generation Civic 1.5 VEi was a landmark for efficiency, showcasing Honda's VTEC-E technology designed for lean-burn operation. Unlike the performance-oriented VTEC found in the VTi, the VEi's D15Z1 engine effectively operated as a 12-valve unit at low revs to maximise fuel economy before engaging all 16 valves for higher loads. Its lightweight 'organic' styling and double-wishbone suspension at all four corners provided a level of handling sophistication rarely seen in economy-focused hatchbacks of the era. Today, clean examples are increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate the EG's pure design and Honda's 1990s engineering peak.

Honda Civic EG fun facts
- The VEi's VTEC-E system could achieve an air-fuel ratio as lean as 22:1 during cruising, significantly higher than the standard 14.7:1 stoichiometric ratio.
- Despite being an economy model, the VEi retained the EG hatchback's unique 'clamshell' tailgate, where the glass window flips up and the lower metal portion drops down.
- The VEi was the European equivalent to the North American Civic VX, which is famous in the hypermiling community for its record-breaking real-world fuel economy.
