About the Honda Civic EF

The EF-generation Civic 1.6i-VT represents a landmark in automotive engineering as one of the first production cars to feature Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system. While the Japanese market received the SiR, the i-VT was the range-topping performance model for Europe, featuring the B16A1 engine capable of screaming to an 8,000 rpm redline. Its lightweight chassis and sophisticated double-wishbone suspension at all four corners provided handling precision that rivalled contemporary sports cars. Today, it is highly sought after by collectors for its purity, mechanical durability, and historical significance as the progenitor of the high-performance VTEC era.

Honda Civic EF fun facts

  • The 1.6i-VT was one of the first naturally aspirated production engines to exceed 90 horsepower per litre.
  • Unlike many hot hatches of the era that used torsion beams, the EF Civic used a complex four-wheel double-wishbone suspension setup derived from Honda's racing experience.
  • The European i-VT is distinguished from lesser models by its deeper front spoiler, rear wing, and specific alloy wheels.
