About the Ford Escort Mk5
The fifth-generation Ford Escort is historically significant for being one of the most critically panned car launches in British history. Upon its 1990 debut, the Mk5 was lambasted by the motoring press for its dull styling, unrefined CVH engines, and regressive handling compared to the Mk4. The 1.4 LX was a mid-range trim that offered basic comforts like a sunroof and central locking but suffered from the same lacklustre driving dynamics as the rest of the range. Ford was forced to rush a major facelift (Mk5b) into production by late 1992 to address these failings, making original Mk5s a curious footnote in Ford's history.

Ford Escort Mk5 fun facts
- Autocar magazine famously gave the Mk5 Escort a 2 out of 10 rating, a score so low it prompted an emergency meeting at Ford's headquarters.
- The 1.4-litre engine used in the 1992 LX was the aging CVH unit, which was eventually replaced by the much-improved Zetec engine family.
- Despite the critical panning, the Escort remained one of Britain's best-selling cars due to Ford's massive dealer network and fleet dominance.
