About the Ford Thunderbird
The ninth-generation Thunderbird, introduced for the 1983 model year, represented a radical departure from the boxy 'personal luxury' predecessors. Known as the 'Aero Bird', its wind-tunnel-honed shape achieved a drag coefficient of 0.35, influencing the design of the later Ford Taurus. While the 3.8-litre Essex V6 was the base engine, the car's significance lies in its aerodynamic styling which revitalised Ford's image in the 1980s. It remains an accessible entry point into 1980s American car culture, though it lacks the performance of the contemporary Turbo Coupe.
