About the Ford Thunderbird
The fourth-generation Thunderbird, nicknamed the 'Flair Bird', moved the model further away from its sporting roots toward the 'personal luxury' segment. It featured a distinctive squared-off design with a formal roofline and a futuristic interior highlighted by a 'Swing-Away' steering wheel that moved aside for easier entry. While heavy, the 390 cubic-inch FE V8 provided effortless cruising power, though the soft suspension was tuned strictly for comfort rather than cornering. It remains a landmark of 1960s American design, particularly for its sequential rear turn signals and wrap-around rear lounge seating.

Ford Thunderbird fun facts
- The 1964 Thunderbird was the first car to feature sequential rear turn signals, though legal delays meant they weren't activated until the 1965 model year in some regions.
- The 'Swing-Away' steering wheel was a standard feature that moved 10 inches to the right when the car was in Park to assist the driver.
- Despite its size, the fourth-gen Thunderbird used a unibody construction rather than the traditional body-on-frame design common to American cars of the era.
