About the Ford Thunderbird
Ford introduced the Thunderbird for the 1955 model year as a stylish two-seat personal car. Its 292-cubic-inch Y-block V8 made 193 hp with the standard three-speed manual gearbox, while automatic cars had a slightly higher output. The removable fibreglass hardtop and comfort-focused cabin helped it find buyers beyond the sports-car market. The 53,166-car production count covers the complete 1955–1957 first generation, not just the launch year.
