About the Ford Thunderbird
The eighth-generation Thunderbird arrived in 1980 as a significantly smaller and lighter car, moving to the Ford Fox platform shared with the Fairmont and Mustang. This downsizing was a response to the 1970s energy crisis, resulting in a car that was 17 inches shorter and 800 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The 4.2-litre (255 cu in) V8 was a de-bored version of the classic 302, designed specifically for better fuel economy rather than performance. While it retained the traditional 'luxury' styling cues like hidden headlamps and opera windows, its reduced stature and modest power output led to a decline in sales compared to the record-breaking seventh generation.
