About the AMC Matador
The first-generation AMC Matador replaced the Rebel in 1971, serving as American Motors' primary intermediate offering. For 1972, the 304 cubic-inch (5.0L) V8 became a popular choice, offering a balance of durability and sufficient power for family and fleet use. While the Matador is perhaps best remembered for its later 'coffin-nose' coupe and its role as a ubiquitous police cruiser in shows like Adam-12, the early sedans were praised for their 'Buyer Protection Plan' warranty and straightforward mechanicals. It offers a soft, comfort-oriented ride typical of the era, though its handling is best described as relaxed rather than precise.
