About the Volkswagen Polo Mk1

Launched in 1975 as a budget-friendly alternative to the Audi 50, the Mk1 Polo was Volkswagen's entry into the burgeoning supermini segment. It was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, featuring a clean, minimalist aesthetic and a lightweight chassis that prioritised efficiency and space. The 'L' trim added modest luxuries like carpeting and chrome trim to an otherwise spartan interior. Today, it is celebrated for its purity of design and as the progenitor of one of the world's most successful small car lineages.

Volkswagen Polo Mk1 fun facts

  • The Polo was essentially a rebadged Audi 50, but it proved so much more popular that the Audi version was discontinued just three years later.
  • Early models were so basic they featured a simple wire loop for an accelerator pedal and lacked a fuel gauge, relying instead on warning lights.
  • Despite its tiny 895cc engine, the Polo's featherweight 685kg kerb weight ensured it remained nimble and surprisingly fun to drive in urban environments.
