About the Hillman Avenger

The Hillman Avenger was the last clean-sheet design developed by the Rootes Group before its full absorption into Chrysler Europe. Launched in 1970 to compete with the Ford Escort and Morris Marina, it featured contemporary 'Coke bottle' styling and a sophisticated four-link coil-spring rear suspension that provided class-leading handling. The 1.3 DL (De Luxe) was the entry-level variant, featuring a simple strip-style speedometer and rubber floor mats. Despite its humble positioning, the Avenger's robust engineering made it a successful platform for club rallying and a staple of 1970s British motoring.
