About the Smart ForTwo
Originally launched as the City-Coupé, the first-generation Smart ForTwo received a significant update in 2003, replacing the 599cc engine with a more robust 698cc unit. Developed as a joint venture between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, its innovative 'Tridion' safety cell allowed it to pass rigorous crash tests despite its diminutive length of just 2.5 metres. The rear-mounted turbocharged engine and automated manual gearbox provide a unique, if occasionally jerky, driving experience tailored for tight city streets. It remains a design icon of the early 2000s, representing a bold attempt to solve urban congestion.

Smart ForTwo fun facts
- The 2003 facelift introduced the 'butterfly' headlights and enlarged the fuel tank from 22 to 33 litres to improve the car's limited range.
- The car is so short that in many European jurisdictions, it was legally permitted to be parked nose-in to the kerb.
- The Tridion safety cell was designed to withstand impacts by using the crumple zones of other vehicles, as the Smart itself had almost no overhangs.
