About the Ford Ka Mk1
Launched in 1996, the Ford Ka was the first production vehicle to showcase Ford's 'New Edge' design language, featuring bold, intersecting curves and unpainted plastic bumpers. While its 1.3-litre Endura-E engine was an archaic pushrod unit derived from the 1950s Kent engine, the chassis was a revelation, offering class-leading steering feel and agility. It shared its platform with the Fiesta Mk4 but felt significantly more playful, becoming a staple of European cities for over a decade. Today, early examples are becoming rare due to corrosion issues, but they are increasingly recognised as modern classic design icons.

Ford Ka Mk1 fun facts
- The Ka's unpainted grey bumpers were designed to be cheap to replace and resistant to the minor scuffs common in tight city parking.
- Despite its budget positioning, the Ka's suspension was tuned under the supervision of Richard Parry-Jones, the engineer responsible for Ford's handling renaissance.
- The name 'Ka' is often debated; Ford intended it to be pronounced as a single word, though many consumers say the individual letters.
