About the Smart ForTwo

The second-generation Smart ForTwo (W451) arrived in 2007, growing slightly in length to meet US crash standards while retaining its signature two-seat layout and Tridion safety cell. The 'mhd' (micro hybrid drive) variant introduced a belt-driven starter-generator that provided a smooth stop-start function, improving urban fuel efficiency by roughly 8%. Powered by a Mitsubishi-sourced 1.0-litre engine, it replaced the tiny turbocharged units of the first generation with a more robust, naturally aspirated powerplant. While the automated manual transmission remains a point of contention for its slow shifts, the car's ability to park perpendicular to the kerb and its tight turning circle make it an unmatched city specialist.

Smart ForTwo fun facts

  • Despite the 'micro hybrid drive' name, the mhd is not a true hybrid; it uses a clever belt-driven starter-generator to enable stop-start functionality.
  • The second-generation ForTwo was the first Smart model to be officially sold in the United States, launching in early 2008.
  • The car's body panels are made of recyclable plastic and are designed to be easily swapped for different colours if the owner desires a new look.
