About the Rover 400 HH-R
The second-generation Rover 400 (HH-R) was the final major collaboration between Rover and Honda, based on the Honda Domani platform. While the five-door hatchback was closely related to the European Civic, the four-door saloon featured unique Rover styling intended to push the brand upmarket into the executive segment. The 416 SLi utilised Rover's own K-Series engine, praised for its efficiency and rev-happy nature, though the car's soft suspension prioritised ride comfort over the sharp handling of its Honda cousins. Today, it is remembered as a comfortable, well-appointed family car that struggled to justify its premium pricing against newer rivals like the Ford Focus.

Rover 400 HH-R fun facts
- The HH-R generation was so closely related to the Honda Civic that they shared the same doors, a constraint that limited Rover's ability to differentiate the exterior styling.
- Despite being marketed as a larger family car to compete with the Ford Mondeo, the 400 was actually based on a smaller 'C-segment' platform, leading to criticisms of interior space.
- The first Rover 400 HH-R off the production line, chassis 001, was originally kept by the company and displayed at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon.
