About the Proton Jumbuck

The Proton Jumbuck, known as the Arena in its home market, is a front-wheel-drive coupé utility based on the Proton Wira (Mitsubishi Lancer) platform. Launched to fill the void left by the Subaru Brumby, it features a unique hybrid construction combining a car monocoque front with a ladder-frame rear chassis for a 645kg payload. While its 1.5-litre Mitsubishi-derived engine offers modest performance, its car-like handling and low running costs earned it a loyal following among small business owners and lifestyle enthusiasts. Despite a poor one-star ANCAP safety rating, it remains a sought-after budget classic for its simplicity and rugged utility.

Proton Jumbuck fun facts

  • The Jumbuck's name is Australian slang for a sheep, reflecting its primary target market where it became Proton's most successful export.
  • It uses a 'torque box' construction to join the front car-based monocoque to the rear ladder-frame chassis, ensuring enough rigidity for heavy loads.
  • Lotus, which was owned by Proton at the time, reportedly assisted in fine-tuning the Jumbuck's ride and handling characteristics.
