About the Proton Compact
The Proton Compact, known as the Satria in its home market, was a three-door hatchback based heavily on the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Mirage (Colt). Launched in the UK in 1995, it offered a budget-friendly alternative to established European superminis by utilizing proven Japanese mechanicals. The 1.3 GLi trim featured a Mitsubishi-sourced 4G13 12-valve engine, known for its durability and simple maintenance. While it lacked the Lotus-tuned handling of the later Satria GTi, the Compact was praised for its reliability and high standard equipment levels relative to its low purchase price. Today, it is a rare sight on UK roads, remembered as a symbol of Proton's early international expansion.
