About the Peugeot 201
Launched at the 1929 Paris Motor Show just as the Great Depression began, the Peugeot 201 was a robust, affordable compact car that ensured the company's survival. It is historically significant for introducing Peugeot's trademark three-digit naming system with a central zero, a convention the brand later legally protected. Mechanically simple, the early 1.1-litre models featured a side-valve engine and a three-speed gearbox. While basic, the 201 was modern for its time, eventually becoming the first mass-produced car to offer independent front suspension in 1931.
