About the Opel Kapitän A
The Opel Kapitän A was the entry-level model of the 'KAD' (Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat) range, Opel's attempt to challenge Mercedes-Benz in the executive sector. While it shared its body and chassis with the more luxurious Admiral and V8-powered Diplomat, the Kapitän offered a more restrained, functional approach to luxury. The 2.8-litre straight-six engine, introduced in 1965 to replace the older 2.6, provided smooth and reliable performance suited for the Autobahn. Its American-influenced styling, penned by Clare MacKichan, gave it a presence that felt both modern and substantial for the mid-1960s. Today, it is a rare alternative to contemporary Fintail Mercedes, valued for its robust engineering and understated elegance.
