About the Opel Diplomat A
Introduced in 1964 as the pinnacle of Opel's 'KAD' (Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat) range, the Diplomat A was designed to challenge Mercedes-Benz with American-inspired luxury and power. It was exclusively powered by Chevrolet small-block V8 engines, with the 4.6-litre '283' unit serving as the initial standard powerplant. While its styling and drivetrain were heavily influenced by General Motors' US divisions, the chassis was tuned for European tastes, featuring a sophisticated De Dion rear axle in later iterations. Despite its impressive performance and high specification, it remained a niche choice compared to its Stuttgart rivals, making well-preserved examples rare today.
