About the Opel Kapitän

Launched at the 1939 Geneva Motor Show, the Opel Kapitän was a landmark for the European automotive industry as one of the first mass-produced cars to feature a unitary (unibody) all-steel construction. Positioned between the Kadett and the flagship Admiral, it offered a modern, streamlined aesthetic that made contemporary Mercedes-Benz models look dated. Its 2.5-litre overhead-valve straight-six provided smooth performance, though civilian production was cut short by the outbreak of the Second World War. Today, pre-war examples are highly prized for their historical significance and advanced engineering, which later influenced the design of the Soviet GAZ-M20 Pobeda.
