About the Triumph TR4
The Triumph TR4 marked a significant modernisation of the TR line, replacing the cut-down doors of the TR3 with a sleek, full-width body designed by Giovanni Michelotti. Beneath the new skin, it retained a rugged 2.1-litre wet-sleeve engine derived from a Ferguson tractor, providing ample low-end torque and a distinctive throaty growl. It introduced practical refinements like roll-up windows and face-level ventilation, alongside the innovative 'Surrey Top'—a precursor to the Targa roof. While it used a live rear axle until the TR4A arrived, its rack-and-pinion steering and front disc brakes made it a formidable and popular choice for both road and club racing.

Triumph TR4 fun facts
- The TR4's optional 'Surrey Top' featured a fixed rear window and a removable roof panel, predating the Porsche 911 Targa by five years.
- The 2,138cc engine was a 'wet-sleeve' design, allowing owners to easily swap cylinder liners to change displacement for different racing classes.
- Despite being a quintessentially British sports car, only about 6% of TR4 production was sold in the UK, with the vast majority exported to the United States.
