About the Land Rover Range Rover P38A
The P38A generation Range Rover was the first to be developed under BMW ownership, tasked with replacing the legendary 'Classic' while moving the brand further upmarket. The 4.6 HSE was the range-topping performance variant, featuring a bored-out version of the venerable Rover V8 and a sophisticated, albeit complex, electronic air suspension system. While its predecessor was a utilitarian tool evolved into a luxury car, the P38A was designed from the outset to compete with premium German saloons, offering a significantly more refined cabin and improved road manners. Today, it is gaining recognition as a modern classic, though collectors prize well-maintained examples that have escaped the common electrical and suspension gremlins.

Land Rover Range Rover P38A fun facts
- The 'P38A' designation comes from the office building at the Solihull plant, Block 38A, where the development team was based.
- The 4.6-litre V8 engine in the HSE was only available with an automatic transmission, as the manual gearbox of the era could not reliably handle the torque.
- Early P38A models used the Lucas GEMS engine management system, which was replaced by a more reliable Bosch Motronic system in 1999.
