About the Land Rover Series I

Conceived by Maurice Wilks as a stop-gap agricultural vehicle for the Rover Company, the Series I Land Rover became an accidental masterpiece of industrial design. The 1949 80-inch model features the early 1.6-litre 'side-plate' engine and a permanent four-wheel-drive system utilizing a front-axle freewheel mechanism. Its distinctive Birmabright aluminium body panels were a pragmatic solution to post-war steel shortages, resulting in a lightweight, corrosion-resistant workhorse. Today, these early 'lights-behind-the-grille' examples are the most coveted by collectors for their purity and historical significance.
