About the Honda Odyssey
Launched in 1994, the first-generation Honda Odyssey was a radical departure from the truck-based minivans of the era. Built on the fifth-generation Accord platform, it featured four conventionally hinged doors and a low floor that allowed it to be manufactured on existing passenger car assembly lines. Its most innovative feature was the 'Magic Seat,' a third-row bench that folded completely flat into the floor—a design later adopted by nearly every competitor. While its 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine was considered underpowered for the North American market, its car-like handling and exceptional reliability made it a massive success in Japan, where it sparked a 'minivan boom.'
