About the Holden Commodore VN-VS

Launched in August 1988, the VN Commodore marked a significant shift for Holden, moving from the mid-sized VL to a full-sized platform based on a widened Opel Omega floorpan. It introduced the Buick-sourced 3.8-litre '3800' V6, which provided a massive leap in torque and performance over previous six-cylinder models, though it was often criticised for its coarse refinement. The VN was a massive commercial success, winning the 1988 Wheels Car of the Year award and reclaiming market leadership from the Ford Falcon. Today, base V6 models are increasingly rare survivors, valued for their role in defining the modern Australian family sedan.

Holden Commodore VN-VS fun facts

  • The VN Commodore was rebadged and sold as the Toyota Lexcen in Australia as part of the 'Button' car plan to consolidate the local industry.
  • Despite its Australian identity, the VN was based on the European Opel Omega but was widened by 80mm to meet local demands for a true five-seater.
  • The 3.8-litre V6 was so powerful for its time that Holden had to recalibrate the throttle linkage to prevent 'jack-rabbit' starts that caught out unwary drivers.
