About the Volvo 850
Launched in 1991, the 850 represented a massive technical leap for Volvo, moving away from rear-wheel drive to a sophisticated front-wheel drive platform. The GLT trim featured the 20-valve version of the modular 'Whiteblock' five-cylinder engine, noted for its distinctive warbling exhaust note and smooth power delivery. It introduced significant safety innovations, including the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and self-adjusting seatbelts. While the later T-5R gained more fame, the GLT is increasingly appreciated as a balanced, durable modern classic that defined Volvo's 1990s identity.
