About the Holden Commodore VB-VL
Launched in October 1978, the VB Commodore marked a radical departure for Holden, replacing the full-sized Kingswood with a more compact design based on the Opel Rekord E. Despite its German roots, the VB was heavily re-engineered for the Australian Outback, featuring a strengthened chassis and the proven 'Red' straight-six engine. It was praised for its superior handling and 'Radial Tuned Suspension', winning the 1978 Wheels Car of the Year award. Today, the VB is celebrated as the progenitor of Australia's most iconic nameplate, though base 3.3-litre models are now rarer than their V8 counterparts.
