About the Ford Ranger
Introduced for the 1983 model year, the first-generation Ford Ranger was a clean-sheet design intended to replace the Mazda-sourced Courier and compete with rising Japanese imports. It featured a rugged body-on-frame construction and styling that intentionally mimicked the larger F-150, earning it a reputation for being a 'scaled-down' full-size truck. The 2.3-litre 'Lima' engine was a popular choice, offering a balance of fuel economy and utility for light-duty tasks. While performance was modest, its durability and nimble handling made it a commercial success, eventually becoming the best-selling compact truck in America for nearly two decades.
