About the Ford Mondeo Mk1
Launched in 1993 to replace the ageing Sierra, the Mk1 Mondeo was the result of a massive $6 billion 'world car' development programme. It set a new benchmark for front-wheel-drive handling in the family sector, featuring a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension and a fluent chassis tuned by Richard Parry-Jones. The 1.8-litre Zetec engine was the heart of the range, offering a balance of performance and economy that made it a fleet favourite. Today, early Mk1s are becoming rare survivors, celebrated at events like the Festival of the Unexceptional for their cultural significance as the original 'Mondeo Man' transport.
