About the Renault 5 Supercinq
The Renault 5 GT Turbo is the high-performance flagship of the second-generation 'Supercinq' range, designed to compete with the Peugeot 205 GTI. Unlike its mid-engined predecessor, the GT Turbo retained a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout but utilised a Garrett T2 turbocharger to extract significant power from its pushrod Cléon-Fonte engine. The 1988 Phase 2 model introduced a water-cooled turbocharger and revised ignition mapping to improve reliability and increase output to 120 PS. Renowned for its explosive power delivery and lightweight agility, it remains a cult icon of the hot hatch era.
