About the Toyota Starlet P80
The P80-generation Toyota Starlet, launched in 1989, represented a shift toward a more rounded, aerodynamic design compared to its boxy predecessors. In the UK, the 1.3 GLi was the premium trim, featuring the fuel-injected 2E-E engine which offered a significant performance boost over the base 1.0-litre models. Known for its exceptionally low kerb weight and simple mechanicals, the P80 earned a reputation for being virtually indestructible, often outlasting its contemporaries. While the JDM-only GT Turbo models command the highest collector interest, clean examples of the standard GLi are increasingly sought after for their purity and nostalgic appeal. Its driving experience is characterised by light, unassisted steering and a rev-happy engine that makes it surprisingly agile in urban environments.
