About the Volvo 440
Launched in 1988 as a replacement for the 300 Series, the Volvo 440 was a pivotal model in the 'Galaxy Project' that transitioned the brand toward front-wheel-drive layouts. Built at the NedCar plant in the Netherlands, it shared its platform and Renault-sourced engines with the 480 coupé and 460 saloon. The 1.8 Li variant, introduced in 1991, featured single-point fuel injection and provided a balance of efficiency and reliability. While often overshadowed by the larger 850, the 440 is remembered for its wedge-shaped styling, excellent safety features for the era, and practical five-door hatchback configuration.
