About the Ford Falcon XR-XY
Introduced in September 1966, the XR series was a pivotal moment for Ford Australia, moving the Falcon from a compact economy car to a robust full-sized family sedan. Marketed as the 'Mustang-bred Falcon', it featured 'Coke-bottle' styling and, for the first time, offered a V8 engine across the entire range. The 289 cubic-inch Windsor V8 provided a significant performance leap over its Holden rivals, establishing a template for the Australian muscle car era. Its success was cemented by the XR GT's victory at the 1967 Bathurst 500, the first win for a V8-powered car at Mount Panorama.
