About the Ford E-Series
Introduced for the 1961 model year, the first-generation Ford Econoline was a revolutionary departure from traditional American truck design. Developed to compete with the Volkswagen Type 2, it utilised a cab-over-engine layout based on the Ford Falcon's compact underpinnings, placing the driver directly over the front axle. This configuration maximised cargo volume within a short 90-inch wheelbase, though it famously required a 165-pound counterweight over the rear axle to prevent tipping under heavy braking. Today, early 'flat-front' Econolines are highly collectable for their mid-century aesthetic and their role in establishing the E-Series legacy.

Ford E-Series fun facts
- Early testing revealed the Econoline was so front-heavy that the rear wheels could lift off the ground during panic stops, leading Ford to factory-install a heavy ballast weight at the rear.
- The Econoline was originally marketed as part of the Falcon range when configured as a passenger vehicle, known as the Station Bus or Club Wagon.
- Because the engine was located between the front seats, the Econoline is technically a mid-engined vehicle, a layout chosen to provide a flat load floor.
