About the RAF 977

The RAF-977, known as the 'Latvija', was the Soviet Union's first mass-produced minibus, built by the Riga Bus Factory using components from the GAZ-21 Volga. Its cabover design and monocoque body were inspired by the Volkswagen Type 2, though it was significantly larger and powered by a front-mounted engine located between the driver and passenger. Primarily used as a 'marshrutka' (routed taxi) and ambulance, it was never sold to private individuals during its production run. While its passenger-car origins provided a smooth ride, the vehicle was often overloaded in service, leading to frequent suspension and brake failures.

RAF 977 fun facts

  • The engine is located inside the cabin under a large insulated cover, meaning the driver and front passenger sit directly next to the 2.4-litre powerplant.
  • Because the RAF plant in Riga lacked sufficient capacity, a panel van version called the RAF-977K was transferred to Armenia, where it became the long-running ErAZ-762.
  • Early models featured a split-screen windshield and a more rounded front end, which was later simplified to a one-piece screen and a flatter grille for the 977D update.
