About the Ford Cortina Mk1

Launched in 1962 as the 'Consul Cortina', the Mk1 was Ford's answer to the BMC 1100, designed to be simple, light, and inexpensive to run. The 1.2-litre 'Kent' engine provided modest performance, but the car's class-leading interior space and modern styling made it an instant sales success. Its lightweight construction and MacPherson strut front suspension gave it surprisingly agile handling for a family saloon. Today, the Mk1 is a cornerstone of the British classic car scene, prized for its simplicity and nostalgic appeal.
