About the Dodge Viper
The first-generation Dodge Viper, known as the SR I, was a brutal rejection of 1990s refinement, designed as a spiritual successor to the AC Cobra. Developed with input from Carroll Shelby and featuring an all-aluminum V10 engine refined by Lamborghini, it prioritised raw performance over every creature comfort. The 1993 model year remained famously spartan, lacking exterior door handles, glass windows, and electronic aids like ABS or traction control. Its massive torque and short wheelbase earned it a reputation for being difficult to master, yet it remains a landmark of American automotive audacity.

Dodge Viper fun facts
- To open the car from the outside, owners had to unzip the vinyl side windows and reach in for the interior release, as there were no exterior door handles.
- The side-exit exhausts were notorious for causing 'Viper burns' on the legs of unsuspecting drivers and passengers as they exited the vehicle.
- The 8.0-litre V10 engine was originally based on a Chrysler truck engine block, but was extensively redesigned in aluminum by Lamborghini engineers.
