About the DAF 44
Introduced in 1966, the DAF 44 was the first model to use the company's 'B-body' and was styled by the legendary Giovanni Michelotti. It was a significant step upmarket from the earlier Daffodil, offering more space and a larger 844cc air-cooled boxer engine. The car's defining feature is the Variomatic transmission, an early continuously variable system that uses centrifugal weights and vacuum to adjust belt pulleys. While performance is modest, the 44 is celebrated for its mechanical simplicity and its unique ability to drive as fast in reverse as it can forwards.
