About the Austin Mini Mark I

Launched in 1959 as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, Alec Issigonis’s Mini revolutionised small-car packaging with a transverse front engine, front-wheel drive and wheels pushed to the corners. This base 848 cc Mark I is a light, nimble city car rather than a high-speed machine. Its rubber-cone suspension and direct steering make even modest journeys engaging; check for corrosion and originality before buying. The hotter John Cooper-developed versions arrived later, in 1961.
