About the DAF 55
The DAF 55 was a significant step up for the Dutch manufacturer, replacing the two-cylinder engines of earlier models with a water-cooled four-cylinder unit from Renault. It is best known for its 'Variomatic' transmission, a centrifugal CVT that uses rubber belts to provide infinite gear ratios. This system allows the car to be driven as easily as a modern automatic, though with a distinct 'slipping clutch' sensation during acceleration. While often dismissed as a car for the elderly in its day, the 55 proved its durability by successfully competing in the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon.

DAF 55 fun facts
- The Variomatic transmission allows the DAF 55 to theoretically drive as fast backwards as it can forwards, a quirk often exploited in reverse-racing competitions.
- The 1.1-litre engine was essentially the same 'Sierra' unit used in the Renault 8 and Renault 10 of the same era.
- DAF 55s finished the gruelling 10,000-mile London-Sydney Marathon in 1968, proving the reliability of the belt-drive system under extreme conditions.
